Less Can Be More

A few weeks ago, this video stood out to me because of Cameron Smith’s reaction to he and Jonas Blixt’s win at the 2017 Zurich Classic. He said nothing—yet he said so much. It’s the power of raw emotion.

It’s amazing how many leaders we work with who put up a shield and don’t share emotion–and should. My role is to empower them to feel confident in showing their emotions—they’re so influential when they do.

As people, we constantly feel like we have to fill the air with words or cover up how we really feel about something, but great communication is all about being consistent. If you feel it, show it! It’s as simple as that. Showing how you feel is your ticket to real authenticity and vulnerability.

Too often, people think they shouldn’t or can’t share their world with others—and that includes their emotions.

There are extremes to this, though. Like, John Boehner.

When I started working in communications, I was coaching a leader who started crying when he was talking about the impact his kids made on him. It was a touching moment, and it’s something I’ll never forget. Even now, I would go above and beyond for him because of his authenticity and the vulnerability that he shared with me on that day.

Who are the people that you feel most connected to? I’m betting that it’s those who share more—because sharing emotion matters. Often, even more than words.

  1. As always, Ben, your posts and classes are invaluable to leaders and anyone who communicates for a living. So nice to see your company continue to thrive, as your family has had a tremendous impact on me over the years in work and family.
