Confidence in Speaking and American Idol

Posted by Bert Decker   |   February 5th, 2007   |   3 Comments   |  Tweet This

Melinda_doolittle Melinda Doolittle is a terrific singer – but she didn’t believe it when she was on American Idol last week. I hope she does now.

Most of the American Idol tryouts in these first weeks are terrible – filled with overblown acts who have too MUCH confidence, or feigned confidence. And little talent. How refreshing to see Melinda.

I hunch she will grow quickly from backup singer to frontliner – and if not, her lack of confidence could be the only thing that will hold her back.

In my experience in speaking, I have seen hundreds of people hold themselves back – not believing they are good communicators. Maxwell Maltz found in Psychocybernetics that we ALL undermine ourselves, and I find that to be experientially true in observing many thousands of people under pressure. We are all better than we think we are, and would do well to show it.

Confidence is internalized from gaining skills with practice and feedback. And believing what we see. In the meantime, the "Act as if" principle is well served. William James said, "Do the act and the attitude will follow."

I’ve found that to be absolutely true. And I very much hope Melinda Doolittle will ‘act as if’ until she can actually see how talented she is – her MySpace page indicates she will.

Just Do It!

Do NOT use beta blockers (or alcohol or other drugs) to overcome the fear of public speaking (affectionately referred in the biz as Glossophobia.)

To most of you that seems strange – who would do such a thing. The fear of speaking afflicts more than you think – and strange antidotes come up.About two months agoI had a top level executive ask me whether he should take "his beta blockers" before coming to his one day Platinum Executive Coaching session with me. (Obviously not.)

And then I just ran across this great post on Public Speaking Sucker , rightly recommending against a new drug that some are using called Seroquel.

The ONLY way to get over the fear of public speaking is to ‘just do it.’ But do it with feedback and coaching – video feedback is critical. With practice under pressure comes confidence and skill.

"The skill to do comes from the doing." Cicero

"Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain." Emerson

Teatro_3 Talk about Creating An Experience – Teatro Zinzanni wrote the book. Or rather, put on the show. Well, they truly created the Experience.Teatro_two_girls_1

Last night our growing company of Decker Communications, Inc. had our belated holiday party at Teatro Zinzanni – a dinner/show in San Francisco (also in Seattle.) And our eighteen people who are experts in communication were blown away. So there were lessons to be learned – three, naturally…
